The Morgalad 4d6 TTRPG includes specific mechanics for dealing with insanity, adding depth to the narrative and challenging players beyond just combat encounters.
Insanity can be a temporary or permanent affliction in the Morgalad Fantasy RPG. The sources outline three main causes for a character to be driven insane:
- Permanent damage to a character’s knowledge or consciousness attribute.
- Experiencing a Traumatic Event.
- A significant Change in Morality/Personality.
When a character experiences one of these events, there is a chance they may suffer from some form of insanity. To determine this, the player rolls 1d6; if the die lands on a 1, the character goes insane.
The duration of this insanity is also determined by a die roll. Rolling 1d6, if the result is a 1 or a 6, the infliction is permanent. If the die lands on any other number, the insanity is temporary, lasting for 2d6 days.
The Morgalad Basic Fantasy RPG presents three types of insanity, determined by rolling 1d6 on a specific table:
- Fractured Perceptions (Roll 1-2): The character’s grasp on reality is distorted, making foes appear friendly and friends seem dangerous. If the character attempts to aid a comrade, they must succeed on a Will challenge against Difficulty Rating (DR) 15 or they instead aid the closest nearby opponent. Similarly, if they attempt to harm an enemy, they must succeed on a Will challenge of DR 15 or harm the closest nearby ally.
- Memory Loss (Roll 3-4): The character loses recollection of their past, their abilities, and their equipment.
- Phobia (Roll 5-6): The character develops a phobia related to the cause of their traumatic event. They suffer a -3 point penalty to all dice rolls when they encounter their phobia.
Integrating these mechanics into your Morgalad 4d6 TTRPG session can provide compelling role-playing opportunities. While the rules provide mechanical effects, portraying a character grappling with fractured perceptions, the confusion of memory loss, or the overwhelming fear of a phobia adds significant depth to the character and the story. A Host can use these moments to challenge players creatively, perhaps requiring a character with Memory Loss to re-discover their abilities or forcing a character with a Phobia to confront their fear to advance the plot.
